Burnout doesn't always mean falling apart
The people who come to Sweetnam Psychology with burnout are often still showing up — to work, to family, to their responsibilities. From the outside, they look fine. Competent, even. But internally, the tank is empty. There's a flatness to everything. The things that used to matter don't. Getting through the day takes everything they have.
This kind of burnout is easy to miss — and easy to dismiss. Because you're still functioning, it can feel like you don't have the right to struggle. Or like you just need a holiday, a routine change, more sleep. But rest alone doesn't fix burnout when its roots go deeper than tiredness.
Emotional exhaustion
A deep depletion that sleep doesn't fix. Feeling wrung out, flat, and disconnected — from your work, your relationships, and yourself.
The high achiever's burnout
You've built your identity around performance and capability. When that starts to crack, there's often shame alongside the exhaustion — which makes it harder to reach for help.
Cynicism & detachment
A creeping sense of meaninglessness. Going through the motions. Withdrawing from the people and things you used to care about.
The body catching up
Chronic tension, frequent illness, difficulty sleeping, a nervous system that never fully settles. The body keeps score even when the mind insists everything is fine.
Why rest isn't always enough
When burnout is about more than doing too much
Burnout is often framed as a workload problem — too many demands, not enough resources. And sometimes that's true. But for many high-functioning people, the burnout runs deeper than circumstances. It's driven by internal patterns: the compulsion to perform, the difficulty saying no, the inability to rest without guilt, the identity built entirely around being useful or capable.
When those patterns are at the root, changing your schedule won't fix it. The depletion returns — in the next role, the next relationship, the next season of life — because the underlying dynamic hasn't shifted.
Depth-focused therapy works with those patterns directly. Not just what you're doing, but why — and what it would mean to stop.

The approach
Burnout treatment on the Gold Coast & Northern Rivers
Taylor Sweetnam is a clinical psychologist and published researcher who works with high-functioning adults experiencing burnout on the Gold Coast and across the Northern Rivers. Her approach is grounded in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) — an evidence-based method that works with the emotional patterns driving burnout, not just its symptoms.
This is particularly well suited to the kind of burnout that persists despite external changes — because it goes to the internal dynamics sustaining it. The work is collaborative, direct, and aimed at meaningful and lasting change.
In-person sessions are available at the Miami clinic on the Gold Coast and at the Kingscliff clinic in the Northern Rivers. Telehealth sessions are available across Australia. Evening and weekend appointments are available at both locations and via telehealth.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is burnout a clinical condition? Can I get a Medicare rebate for it?
Burnout itself isn't a standalone diagnosis in the DSM, but it frequently presents alongside depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders — all of which are covered under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Your GP can assess and provide a referral. Medicare rebates apply for eligible patients.
I'm still functioning at work. Is it bad enough to seek help?
Yes. You don't need to have hit a wall to benefit from therapy. In fact, working with burnout before it becomes crisis is significantly easier and more effective. Functioning on the outside while depleted on the inside is exactly the kind of presentation Taylor works with regularly.
How is burnout therapy different from coaching or stress management?
Coaching and stress management focus primarily on strategies, productivity, and external change. Therapy goes deeper — to the patterns, beliefs, and emotional dynamics that sustain burnout even when circumstances change. It's a different level of work that produces a different kind of change.
Is burnout therapy available via telehealth?
Yes. Telehealth sessions are available Australia-wide and evening and weekend appointments are available both in-person and via telehealth — practical for people whose burnout is partly driven by the difficulty of carving out time during business hours.
Where are you located for in-person burnout therapy?
In-person sessions are available at the Miami clinic on the Gold Coast, and at the Kingscliff clinic in the Northern Rivers. Both locations offer evening and weekend appointments.
